Recreation

Recreational activities are an integral part of the holistic approach to wellness at WGA.

All youth participate in a multifaceted recreational program, with daily structured and unstructured activities in a variety of venues.

Activities are designed to aid with physical fitness and to be supportive, therapeutic and motivational. Recreation staff participate in all activities in the interest of closer supervision as well as to model appropriate behaviors.

Scholastic team and individual sports take place inside the Boscowitz Field House, where there is a collegiate size gymnasium and Olympic size pool. Youth also have access to a weight room for strength training.

Adventure Based Counseling is offered at the James F. Purcell Project Adventure Building, an indoor ropes course facility. The course offers a series of activities and challenges on both low and high elements designed to encourage teamwork and personal confidence. Youth learn skills such as cooperation, problem-solving, leadership, goal-setting and trust.

Recreation staff also facilitate nature walks, movies nights, tournaments, creative arts and crafts, fun runs and the annual campus-wide Olympic Days (pictured below).

Horseback riding is also offered as a recreational activity during the week at J. Brad Herman Equine Center on campus.  At the center, youth learn to confidently and safely ride indoors and outside on campus trail systems, different riding disciplines, horse care management, and grooming techniques. As they progress, they learn more advanced maneuvers and may explore other riding disciplines. When schedules allow, youth may have the opportunity to either watch or participate in local horse shows.
