Cornell Career Exploration Program Class Four: Gu Cornell Career Exploration Program

Class Four: Guest Speaker and Industry Overview: Entertainment

Throughout this program, guest speakers from various industries and job functions will appear via Zoom to share their career journeys, including what they do for a living, and how their goals have changed since they graduated high school.

Our third industry overview and guest speakers were from entertainment. Our first guest speaker, Casey Scott Leach is a multimedia artist and educator. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Drama from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music (CCM), and has lived in New York City since 2011. He has been producing, performing, and teaching there ever since.

Our second guest speaker, Dione Kuraoka is a television/film actress who teaches and performs improve and sketch comedy in Los Angeles. Some of her TV credits include Adam Ruins Everything, Goliath, General Hospital, and Alive in Denver. Film credits include Adopt a Highway staring Ethan Hawke. You can watch her onstage in LA at UCB, IO West and The Acme Theatre.

Mr. Leach and Ms. Kuraoka provided our students with an amazing presentation and overview of the entertainment industry!

Class Seven: Combining Key Ingredients

The goal of the seventh class was to have students think creatively about combining ingredients from the pantry that they learned about from class six to make nutritious and delicious meals. The students participated in three hands-on activities designed to test their knowledge and understanding of everything they have learned in the program so far. This included a “Chopped” game where the students were split into two groups and each asked to design a meal using only a few basic ingredients from the pantry. Each group was able to ‘purchase’ only one ingredient for their meal. Each group presented their ideas and were awarded points based on creativity, nutritional content and staying within their budget. The students ended class by preparing for their final class and dinner presentation next week!

Class Three: Guest Speaker and Industry Overview: Sports/Professional Services

Throughout this program, guest speakers from various industries and job functions will appear via Zoom to share their career journeys, including what they do for a living, and how their goals have changed since they graduated high school.

Our second industry overview and guest speaker was from sports/professional services. Our guest speaker, Katie Colton is an associate at the global firm McKinsey & Company. She earned her M.B.A from Cornell University’s Johnson Graduate School of Management, where she was a Roy H. Park Leadership Fellow, and was awarded the prestigious John Boldgett Peer Award. She previously worked as a programming supervisor for New England Sports Network (NESN). She currently lives in Denver, Colorado. Ms. Colton shared her experiences working in both the sports and professional services industry. Her career at McKinsey & Company allows her to help organizations across the private, public, and social sectors create lasting change that matters most to them. She enjoys being challenged with new projects, helping others and traveling around the world. Ms. Colton’s presentation was a remarkable experience for everyone!

Class Six: Kitchen Staples, Food Preservation and Food History

The goal of the sixth class was to introduce the students to common items that make home cooking easier and more delicious and nutritious! Students participated in a hands-on jam making demonstration where they were each able to make several batches of homemade strawberry jam! While their jam simmered the students checked in on the fresh herbs they planted during class two and were then introduced to a video and discussion regarding preservation and its importance in food history. Class ended with a dried herb tasting opportunity for each youth and discussion on the nutritional value of herbs!
