Community Based

Therapeutic After-School Program

The Therapeutic After-School Program (TAP) centers on the idea that dysfunctional behaviors of children can be modified through the development of constructive relationships with both peers and adults. Its purpose is to provide the most effective and highest quality treatment to troubled youth in Tompkins County, with a goal of reducing or preventing the need for a higher level of structured care in the future.

TAP seeks to strengthen and preserve the family unit by helping youth develop the social skills, attitudes, and self-direction necessary to grow into productive members of the community. Family members of TAP youth actively participate in services and training so that skills learned in the program are brought back to the home and community settings.

Youth services occur from the time school lets out to approximately 9:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday of each week; team meetings and family work happen on Fridays.

Services include: individual, group, and family therapy, access to specialized programs addressing alcohol and substance use and sexually reactive behaviors, medication management, structured recreation, therapeutic play and tutorial assistance, monthly parent support groups, a monthly in-home family counseling session, and access to WGA’s equine therapy, adventure based counseling indoor ropes challenge course, athletic and dining facilities.
