The holidays are a seasonal experience, rich in family and cultural traditions and a source of great joy for many. Unfortunately for young people who have histories of emotional and physical trauma, the holidays can also be a time of turmoil, triggering moments of conflict and unpleasant memories. Many experience increased stress, anxiety, and feelings of sadness, grief and loss.
You can help.
Some youth at WGA will be at home with their families for the holidays when it is safe for them to do so, while others have no place to go or are sadly unwanted. It is for all these young people that a special Holiday Cottage Appeal is made during the holiday season.
A gift from you shows someone cares.
Residential cottages serve as a home-away-from-home while youth learn behaviors, boundaries and coping skills at WGA that foster healthier relationships. Donations received through the Holiday Cottage Appeal support creating a festive environment on campus, a gift for every child, and a special holiday meal. No matter the year, the aim of the Holiday Cottage Appeal remains the same:
- to reinforce a sense of belonging and connection
- to brighten the life of a child who cannot go home out of concern for safety or whose family is unable to send a gift
- to introduce and reinforce positive memories for youth to build on.
The message to children while in our care is that they are not alone or forgotten by their community. Holiday festivities are designed to encourage feelings of being appreciated, valued and that someone cares.

Any amount helps; $1,000 helps to cover holiday-related costs for one cottage serving between 9-12 young residents.
