WGA understands there is no one typical family. Family as we have come to define it encompasses parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings and close friends – anyone who is willing and able to serve as a support network for youth when they return to their community.
We also understand that healing happens at the speed of trust. With this in mind, WGA staff help youth to rebuild trust and improve ruptured family relationships whenever doing so would not impede a youth’s progress or well-being. Eligible youth are encouraged to visit with family on the weekends in their home community, and families are welcome to visit youth on campus throughout the duration of their loved one’s therapeutic program.
A special annual event at WGA that brings youth and families together is Family Day. On this day, families come to campus to see what youth are learning. A typical Family Day kicks off with a BBQ luncheon prepared by dining hall staff. After eating together, families attend an open house of the residences and school classrooms, followed by interactive demonstrations from the vocational programs on campus. The day is capped with family-friendly activities and games.
