Tip for #ChildAbusePreventionMonth Social skills are important for children to become successful adults. Children and youth learn what they live and develop these skills gradually. When parents, grandparents and other caregivers take the time to help children learn social and emotional competence, they are strengthening a child's resiliency to stress and improving a child's relationship to self and others. Ways to encourage pro-social skills include praising kids for their unique qualities and when they do well, talking about and celebrating differences, and establishing a "no technology" day. #ChildAbusePreventionMonth #ThrivingFamilies #wgaforchildren #carefirst

Parenting is stressful, and some situations are more difficult than others. Histories of trauma, marital conflict, substance use, financial stressors or community violence can wreak havoc on self-esteem and make it harder to parent effectively. Stress affects children too. In times of stress, it's important to reflect and draw on our strengths and resources. Things to alleviate stress include journaling your thoughts, doing something creative, taking a nap, spending time outdoors, meditating or praying, and connecting to community support groups.
