Congratulations to Bryan Jasper on receiving the Employee of the Month award for September. He was nominated by Awake Overnight, Kathleen Kelly, in recognition of his nearly thirty years of hard work, dedication, and consistency to create a healthy environment for youth to grow and develop into young adults. Mr. Jasper gives freely of his knowledge, is able to develop and maintain relationships with residents, and is skilled at therapeutically de-escalating situations. He has clear and healthy boundaries and sets a great example for youth and new employees.

The Animal-Assisted Intervention Program (AAIP) ex

The Animal-Assisted Intervention Program (AAIP) explicitly directed for the use of canines is referred to as “Paws First” and is a vehicle for employees and their dogs to implement animal-assisted intervention therapies, activities, and education for the youth on our campus. The Paws First program is separated into two distinct phases. The first phase entails two dog trainers assisting a group of employees and their dogs, with the assistance of a youth, to complete the American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizen and Trick Dog training curriculum. The Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program teaches good manners to dogs and responsible dog ownership to their owners. The ten-step CGC test is a non-competitive test for all dogs. The first phase of the program is centered on positive reinforcement-based dog training to increase a participating youth’s confidence and independence, self-esteem, sense of purpose, and safety awareness. Youth will learn how to care for an animal through this process properly.

We recently started our eighth round of the dog training program, with six new canines, staff, and youth participating.
