"George Jr. has helped me a lot. I got work experience, did things I otherwise would never had the opportunity to do and learned a lot about my self. This place has changed my life."

Dan S.

"When I was in trouble, The William George Agency for Children Services gave me a chance, while other facilities did not. During my stay, I developed memorable relationships with both the staff and the residents. I realized then that my situation was not hopeless, and that things would only improve. The GJR is full of concerned, caring staff, and not drill instructors. Thanks in part to this facility, I managed to retain hope as a more productive and positive individual."

Academic Programming

Vocational Program

The George Junior Republic Union Free School District is a fully accredited public school serving the educational needs of its residents. The George Junior Republic Union Free School District is registered with the New York State Education Department as a junior/senior high school (grades7-12). The school has been authorized by the State Education Department to issue credits/ units of study to students who attend our school. Credits earned at "The Republic" are transferable , and will be accepted by any school district in New York State. Regents, Local and I.E.P Diplomas are awarded to students meeting appropriate graduation requirements. Additionally, the school has been designated as an Alternative High School Equivalency Program site. This enables The Republic to provide a thorough GED preparation program for those eligible students seeking an alternative approach to earning a diploma.
Classrooms are structured in 6:1:1 ratios (6 students: 1 teacher: 1 teacher aid). The structure of this setting allows for highly individualized instruction, enabling students to recover lost academic standing. The Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is designed and reviewed with parents in the interest of supporting such achievement. The combination of dually certified teachers (special education and secondary education) and small classrooms makes possible a better awareness of the individual strengths and needs of students that can be developed into successful leaning strategies.
The Republic runs a 12-month academic program. There are computers in every classroom that are extensively incorporated into daily instruction. The business education curriculum includes a food service co-educational sequence in which students get experiences managing a small campus restaurant open to the public. Students also make use of an art studio with ceramic and photography facilities, a woodworking shop, a computer lab, and a fitness center. Students also have an opportunity to participate in interscholastic sports and a variety of other co-curricular activities. Guidance is provided for academic program placement, and for transitioning back to a child's home school. Students who graduate during placement also receive assistance in making preparation for a career and/ or further education.
In addition to required coursework, The Republic offers a sophisticated work experience program consisting of 14 trades and occupations. The Work Experience Program provides students an opportunity to learn and practice basic occupational skills and gives students a chance to gain valuable trade specific experience. Experience is provided in the form of daily training and paid practical work. Fields available to students include; auto shop, carpentry, custodial services, driving range, equine management, food services, heavy equipment, horticulture, laundry, lawn maintenance, painting, the Pizza Express, plumbing, and upholstery. These opportunities provide students with an edge over no-experienced applicants upon entering the job market in their respective communities.
Very often, the work program has been responsible for breakthroughs in a child's treatment.

Recreation

The Recreation Department is based in the 39,000 square foot Boscowitz Field house, whose facilities include a large gym; Olympic sized pool, movie lounge and snack bar, fitness center, and crafts and games areas. The campus pond is used for boating and fishing, and the Newman Equine Center for indoors and trail riding. Additional athletic fields are currently under construction.
The program schedule provides a range of structured and open recreation activities of both competitive and noncompetitive varieties. There is a club program for collectors, musicians and game enthusiasts. Outdoor education has included weekend and vacation camping in the Adirondacks, trail biking, and canoeing and fishing. The program at large follows a general wellness model-balancing physical fitness, stress management, environmental sensitivity, nutrition, and responsibility to self and others, with an emphasis on teamwork.
